Emeralds

A stone not native to Ireland – even though Ireland is referred to as the Emerald Isle and Emeralds are used widely in Irish Jewelry, Emeralds are in fact largely from Colombia and their association to Ireland is purely thanks to their vivid green color.

Taking its name from the ancient Greek word for green “smaragdus”, the Emerald is probably the most recognizable member of the Beryl family, and this intense green stone was once associated with healing powers. In fact if legends are to be believed, Emeralds are thought to have also made their wearer more intelligent and witty.

The birth stone for May and the gift traditionally given on a couple’s 55th wedding anniversary, Emeralds can be found to adorn many pieces of modern day jewelry including, earrings, rings, bracelets and pendants, and in particular in Ireland, to adorn shamrock jewelry due to their vibrant green color.
